Choosing the Name!

Treasure of Baghdad, a nice name for a blog, right? I was thinking over and over what to choose for this blog. Finally, I found out that because I love and adore Baghdad, I should call it Treasure of Baghdad. Many people might not know what does the treasure of Baghdad mean. For me, it's civilization.

Maybe many people do not know what Baghdad is and maybe the only thing they know about it is that it is the capital of Iraq. But here is a summary about Baghdad as a start to this blog.

The origin of the name "Baghdad" is under some dispute. Some historians say it means "The gift of God...." During at least one point in history, it certainly seemed so.

In about 762 A.H., the Abbasid dynasty took over rule of the vast Muslim world and moved the capital to the newly-founded city of Baghdad. Over the next five centuries, the city would become the world's center of education and culture. This period of glory has become known as the "Golden Age" of Islamic civilization, when scholars of the Muslim world made important contributions in both the sciences and humanities: medicine, mathematics, astronomy, chemistry, literature, and more. Under Abbasid rule, Baghdad became a city of museums, hospitals, libraries, and mosques.

While Europe festered in the Dark Ages, Baghdad was thus at the heart of a vibrant and diverse civilization. It was known as the world's richest and most intellectual city of the time.

But can you imagine what happened to this civilization recently? It was oppressed, killed and slaughtered. Do you know by whom? No, not those in your mind. It was killed by Saddam. Yes, Saddam! He killed it, destroyed it, and made all the people mourn it. But I always say that there is a glimpse of hope that this great city will be back for the most important thing in the world, which is the freedom it was deprived from for decades, and as it is said, "Hope floats!". More coming soon.
