Under Their Eyes

In 2006, Sunni insurgents drove out my uncle’s family in Dora, a neighborhood where they lived happily among their Sunni and Christian neighbors for about fifteen years before the outbreak of the war. Since they left, the house became occupied by a Sunni family who was driven out a Shiite neighborhood by Shiite militias. The house is in a miserable condition, as one of the neighbors told my uncle by phone. He urged him not to come back fearing they might be hurt by the same family.

After my aunt the journalist was driven out of her house too and her husband kidnapped and released for a ransom, their house has been occupied by a family insurgents brought and relocated in the house. When her husband was kidnapped and then released, the kidnappers, who were Sunni insurgents, threatened to kill them the next time they attempt to come visit the house. And so they didn’t dare to go since. Instead, they rented a small apartment in a Shiite neighborhood and started collecting furniture from scratch.

Under the eyes of the government, parliament and the U.S. occupying forces, millions of people were driven out of their homes and were left with no compensations or guarantees of going back to their neighborhoods. The government keeps claiming that the situation has “improved,” yet millions of displaced civilians are still unable to get back to their occupied homes where they spent every penny they had to build them during the hard years of Saddam’s reign.

The BBC news website posted a heartbreaking first-person account of a woman who tried to see her house which she and her family were driven out of. This kind of news you rarely find in American media.

A Crime We'll Never Forget

On this day but Seventeen years ago, hundreds of innocent Iraqi civilians were hiding from the American terror bombardments in a bomb shelter in Amiriya neighborhood west of Baghdad. They didn’t know that the craws were hovering over the building. They children were playing, women were chatting and praying for safety and the elderly were either reading or praying too. Then, a sudden shock, huge fire and then everyone melted on the floor and the walls.

The shelter was destroyed with the people hiding in it by two American laser-guided "smart bombs" on 13 February 1991 during the Gulf War, killing more than 408 civilians.

Seventeen years have passed and that tragedy never left Iraqis’ minds. It never made them forget the brutality and the crime. Seventeen years ago, the whole world stood silent. The world let America lead them to make the remaining living Iraqis they didn’t kill starve for twelve years. Twelve years of deprivation of food and medicine. Twelve years of thousands of tragedies.

And now after seventeen years, the tragedy has crossed the shelter’s walls and entered every civilian's house.

To the souls of the martyrs of the Amriya shelter who were murdered on the same hands that murdered Hiroshima and Nagasaki, I still remember you and will never forget you or forget what happened to you. May those who threw the missiles on you never feel peace. Ever.

Iraqi Kids Being Trained to become Terrorists

I just can’t believe what I have just seen. This is madness. About twenty Iraqi children were being trained to kidnap and kill at what seems to be an al-Qaeda training camp somewhere in the country yard. I noticed that all these children were Iraqi and the ones who were training them were Iraqi too from the Iraqi Arabic accent they were speaking.

The U.S. military released a video in Baghdad yesterday, saying it was seized during a raid in December in Khan Bani Saad, north of Baghdad. Those who were training the kids stood behind the camera. They watch the kids as they break into a house and capture the people sleeping on the floor inside. They watch them as they stop a man on a bike ordering him to sit on his knees and put his hands behind his back while they direct their AK47s on his head and chest. Some of their moves appeared to be similar to al-Qaeda’s, but the rest looks more like a military training. I believe most of those trainers were members of the disbanded Iraqi army who decided to take revenge after Bremer sent them to the streets.

God! What does Iraq have anymore? The entire new generation is going down. It is impossible Iraq would improve or return to its former shape at least after having this new generation destroyed. Of course, they are destroyed! They have nothing to see except death, bombs, warplanes, helicopters, dead and wounded bodies, shootings, beheadings etc… It has been five years since the war started. It has been five years of their eight or ten years, seeing all of these things in front of their eyes. It’s been five years of complete failure of the Iraqi politicians to sit down and see how grave the danger surrounding us has become. It has been five years of concentrating on who gets more, who changes the flag, and who prays for God. It’s been five damned years and all Iraqis could see is nothing but collapse, segregation, hatred, and blast walls surrounding their once opened neighborhoods.

The video was released, but words and actions from our revered government were not released. What is the parliament doing? Changing the flag? Is that all they could do? Or what? Approving a law of not opening a bank account in a bank not in your neighborhood? Or what? Weren’t they supposed to discuss education, build more schools, lessen the illiteracy rate and change the children’s way live their lives? Don’t these things worth million times of what they are doing right now?

Oh and now there will be those optimists opening their mouths, “How dare you say that. The situation has improved. People are living in peace. There no al-Qaeda” bla bla bla… The danger is deeper and bigger than these illusions. These kids who are trained will someday become terrorists and destroy any peaceful thing in front of them anywhere on earth. And you know what? It’s not only al-Qaeda whom we should blame for that. It’s a lot of people.

This is part of what Sheikh Thaaban al-Bazoon, an Iraqi Tribal Chief said in the The Chivalry of the Iraqi Tribes that was held in Sulaimaniya in last December.
